Find the Right Path for Your Student
Every student starts in a different place. These are some of the paths students take studying violin, viola, and chamber music with Dr. Walfish.
Young Beginners
For students beginning around age five and up, lessons focus on steady rhythm, careful early technique, and building genuine enthusiasm for the instrument from the first lesson.
School Orchestra Students
Private lessons reinforce and go beyond what's covered in school orchestra, building the individual technique and musicianship that make ensemble playing easier and more rewarding.
Youth Orchestra Preparation
Focused work on audition excerpts, scales, and sight-reading for students preparing for youth orchestra placement or advancement auditions.
Advanced Pre-College Students
Demanding repertoire and refined technique for students preparing for competitions, summer festivals, and serious solo or chamber performance.
Conservatory-Bound Students
Repertoire selection, technical refinement, and mock-audition experience for students preparing college and conservatory auditions, informed by Dr. Walfish's own training and his students' admissions to leading programs.
Adult Students
Adult beginners and adult returners are welcome and taught with the same seriousness as any other student, with lesson pacing built around real adult schedules and goals.
Viola Students
For students who want a teacher who is a violist first: idiomatic technique, well-suited repertoire, and mentorship from someone who has built a performing career on viola.
Chamber Music Students
Coaching for duos, trios, and quartets from a working chamber musician, covering ensemble listening, balance, rehearsal technique, and interpretive decision-making.
